2019 Distinguished Practice Award

Paula Charuhas Macris

P_Macris_pic.jpg Paula Charuhas Macris MS, RD, CSO, FAND, CD earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Washington and for the past 32 years, has been employed at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research   Center/Seattle Cancer Care Alliance as the Nutrition Education Coordinator and Pediatric Nutrition Specialist.  She has   provided over 100 local, national, and international presentations on topics related to cancer/hematopoietic cell   transplantation (HCT).  Paula published over 60 review articles, research papers and 18 book chapters; she has edited two   editions of the book HCT Nutrition Care Criteria.  

Paula has served in both elected and appointed positions within ON DPG and has contributed to practice group   publications both as an author and reviewer; she has been an invited speaker at past ON DPG symposiums.  Paula is currently serving on the Academy’s Member Services Committee.  She has been recognized by the Washington Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year Award, the President’s Award, and the Outstanding Dietitian of the Year Award.  Paula was also honored by the Academy as a past recipient of the Excellence in Clinical Practice Award.

2019 Distinguished Service Award

Kelay E Trentham 
K_Trentham_HS_2015_small.jpg Kelay Trentham MS, RDN, CSO, CD, FAND, serves as the lead oncology dietitian for the MultiCare Regional   Cancer Center in Tacoma, WA. She has been instrumental in steering the nutrition program since 2007.  

During her 12-year tenure as an ON DPG member, Kelay has served as a Washington State representative,   Secretary, Chair and is currently the Networks Coordinator.  Her Academy service includes participation in the   Council on Future Practice, serving as an ON reviewer for the position and practice paper on ethical and legal issues   feeding and hydration, and serving as a subject matter expert for the CSO exam writing committee.

 As a long-standing active member of the Association of Community Cancer Centers, she writes articles and blog posts that highlight the value of the RDN in cancer care and serves on the editorial board for Oncology Issues. She advocated for patient access to oncology dietitians at their 2019 Institute for the Future of Oncology and was recently appointed to their Clinical Affairs Committee.

In her 15 years as an oncology RDN, she has given numerous nutrition and cancer related presentations for patients, caregivers, and health care providers.  At least twenty of these discussed medical cannabis for nutrition and/or cancer related conditions. In addition, she has published articles and book chapters highlighting palliative nutrition care for oncology patients and medical cannabis for nutrition related conditions including cancer symptom management. 

When not busy with oncology nutrition matters, Kelay enjoys spending time at her island home with her spouse, dogs, cats and chickens, as well as hiking, cooking, reading, knitting, and meditation.

2019 Award for Excellence in Oncology Nutrition Research

Jyoti Benjamin

jyoti.jpgJyoti Benjamin is a certified specialist in Oncology Nutrition at Virginia Mason Medical Center. Seattle. WA. She is a registered Dietitian and a Fellow of the Academy of Foods and Nutrition, with a Masters in Foods and Nutrition.

Jyoti Has been a RD for over 20 years has worked in India and New Zealand before moving to Seattle, WA.

She developed the nutrition counseling program at Virginia Mason’s Cancer center, were she works with pancreatic cancer patients, has a contributed to the Oncology interest group of the Academy, has her own blog about Nutrition before, during and after cancer, and also has a Telehealth practice, is a speaker and a contributor and a reviewer for the website Momjunction and chemokitchen.
