ON DPG Statement on Racial Injustice and Call to Action

The ON DPG chooses not to remain silent after the killing of George Floyd and the outpouring of energy aimed at addressing centuries of oppression and racism directed at our Black communities. We condemn racism and racial injustice in all forms. Black Lives Matter and we stand in solidarity with our members, colleagues, patients, friends and loved ones. We promise to support anti-racism within ourselves and within our profession and our communities. We will work to center Black voices and create the space for real action to address racism in healthcare and in the US.

We encourage our members to join the efforts of the National Organization of Blacks in Dietetics and Nutrition (NOBIDAN) for the Academy Approved BLM 8:46 Social Media Campaign.

Launching today, June 15th, and every Monday at 8 pm CT for 8 weeks, members are encouraged to take a moment of silence, reflection, meditation, and/or prayer to honor the life of Mr. Floyd. If you can't join the first week, Monday June 15, please join this campaign the following week or any week to continue the conversation. We will be sharing information on our social media pages.

The ON DPG is taking action to support diversity within our own profession by making a contribution to support Diversify Dietetics, a non-profit dedicated to increasing diversity in the field of nutrition. If you wish to contribute individually, please visit their website, www.diversifydietetics.org/donate.

In the near future, we will also be asking you to participate in sharing thoughts on how ON DPG can continue efforts in diversifying our field, better meet the needs of cancer patients of all cultures, understand cancer disparities, and our own implicit biases.

We believe that having conversations is an important starting point to create an inclusive space for all and the Executive Committee knows that our greatest opportunities for learning will be achieved by hearing from our ON DPG members. We encourage you to reach out to our current Diversity Liaison, Anu Kaur at anu@anuhealthyyou.com, with any thoughts, comments, or ideas that you would like to share.

Sincerely and with solidarity,

The Executive Committee of the ON DPG
