    Pediatric Breakout: Hypothalamic Obesity

    Objectives: Recognize the critical role dietitians play in the management of hypothalamic obesity Compare techniques for assessing energy expenditure Recognize the need for a multidisciplinary approach to treating hypothalamic obesity. Speakers: Dr. Ellen Grishman is an Associate Member at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. She completed fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, TX. After fellowship, she joined the UTSW faculty and remained there until the summer of 2023, when she moved to Memphis. She currently runs a multidisciplinary clinic to treat patients with hypothalamic obesity. She enjoys reading and traveling. Karen Ringwald-Smith, MS, RD, LDN, FAND currently works at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as the Research/Education Manager. She has been at St. Jude since 1990 and has worked with many research and medical teams striving to optimize the medical nutrition therapy provided and improve health outcome. Karen is actively participating in several research and evidence-based practice studies. Her core research team consists of four graduate students from the University of Memphis, three student assistants employed by St. Jude, and research observers from various undergraduate and graduate nutrition programs. In addition to her research, she also assists the dietitians in the department with their research efforts. Karen enjoys program development and providing education to the St. Jude family, which includes staff, patients, and caregivers. She has hosted several education programs including Taking it to the Streets, the Nutrition Express, Mommy and Me, and the St. Jude Healthy for Life Program “Delish Nutrish Cooking for St. Jude Kids”. Annually, she enjoys developing campus wide nutrition activities including National Nutrition Month, Kids Eat Right Month, and Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Moderator: Colleen Trupkin, MPH, RD, CSO has more than 20 years of experience in pediatric nutrition, beginning her career in the NICU and later working across oncology, PICU, and multiple outpatient specialties. She has been part of CHOC for more than a decade and has dedicated her practice to oncology since 2018, providing comprehensive support to children and families across the continuum of care and into survivorship. Colleen collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams to strengthen pediatric and oncology nutrition care and has also contributed to peer reviewed publications and national presentations. She also enjoys volunteering, including her work with CHOC’s Community Action Team; staying active through running; and spending time with her husband and their two children.

    Whole Food, Plant-Based Diets in Oncology

    Speaker: Lisa Lammert, RDN, LD, CSO Lisa Lammert, RDN, LD, CSO has been a dietitian at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN for the past 19 years. She is a board-certified specialist in oncology nutrition, has obtained her certificate of training in vegetarian nutrition from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and obtained her Plant-Based Nutrition certificate from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies through eCornell. Lisa works in Mayo Clinic’s Integrative Medicine and Health in the Cancer Survivorship Clinic helping patients build knowledge and skills to improve their diet and lifestyle following cancer treatment. Objectives: Define a whole-food, plant based (WFPB) diet and review recent research on potential benefits in cancer Review key nutrients of concern for deficiency Explore practical ideas to help patients incorporate more plant-predominant eating during treatment and beyond Registration coming soon!
